December 21, 2012 Programs for Parents (PfP) Helps Children Cope with Sandy's Aftermath
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Essex County child care providers participated in a workshop on reducing infant stress. The workshop, sponsored by Programs for Parents, was the result of research provided by Montclair State University's Dr. Gerald Costa, who has studied the emotional impact of disasters on infants and worked with child care providers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. When families are trying to cope with a disaster, infants and toddlers may experience insomnia, resistance to eating, clinging to caregivers and even aggressive behavior.
