Programs for Parents receives funds from local Early Learning Challenge Grant to launch new family engagement initiative and training for Center Directors

Programs for Parents (PfP), a not-for-profit organization working with children, families and child care providers in Essex County, announces the launch of two new early childhood initiatives with funding from Newark’s Early Learning Challenge Grant. The family engagement initiative is in direct response to Newark families’ request for better channels of communication to learn about available resources to support their children’s learning. PfP will create an online resource directory and mobile phone app while also working with local community-based organizations to better link families to needed services. Leadership matters – and efforts to improve the quality of child care in Newark will get a boost with training for early childhood education center directors. Directors will participate in a series of training focused on child development and kindergarten readiness, literacy coaching strategies for classroom teachers, and business management to help sustain providers in light of dwindling state revenues. “I am excited about the momentum in Newark for early childhood education, especially with the input families have had in setting the agenda,” states PfP CEO Beverly Lynn.

Programs for Parents (PfP) Helps Children Cope with Sandy's Aftermath

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Essex County child care providers participated in a workshop on reducing infant stress. The workshop, sponsored by Programs for Parents, was the result of research provided by Montclair State University's Dr. Gerald Costa, who has studied the emotional impact of disasters on infants and worked with child care providers in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. When families are trying to cope with a disaster, infants and toddlers may experience insomnia, resistance to eating, clinging to caregivers and even aggressive behavior.
